Speech Class Participates in Mock Interviews

Students in Ms. Layton’s speech class had the opportunity to participate in mock interviews on Monday, March 4th. Reece Tedford, TRIO Talent Search Advisor, brought two of his colleagues to practice one-on-one interviewing skills. Prior to the interview, students created or updated their resumes and added the future job for which they wanted to interview. Tedford and his team then simulated an interview for that position. Students were graded on not only their answers to the questions but also their handshake, overall appearance, smile, attitude, and confidence, to name a few criteria. “I love this experience for our students,” said speech teacher Emily Layton. “Some of them have never been interviewed before so just having this opportunity will help them be prepared and less nervous the next time around.” Feedback from the students was overwhelmingly positive, and even more so when they read the written comments from their interviewer, especially if [s]he marked that they would hire them. Layton added, “I am so proud of our students and extremely thankful to TRIO for offering this exercise for our students. I hope we can continue this practice year after year.”
