Many of you already know and love our school therapy dog, Dexter! He first joined us last October as a playful puppy and was instantly welcomed by students and staff alike. Now 14 months old, Dexter comes to school every day—he’s always the first one in the car, ready to go!
During the day, Dexter spends most of his time in the main office with school counselor Cayle Chastain-Buckingham, greeting students, staff and guests as they pass through. You’ll also see him in the halls between classes, visiting classrooms, or playing in the library—he’s truly part of our school community.
Thanks to generous support from the CD Community Foundation and the Charlotte Helen Bacon Foundation, Dexter completed 70 hours of training over the summer and is currently working toward earning his Canine Good Citizen (CGC) certification through the American Kennel Club. This 10-step certification recognizes dogs with great manners and calm temperaments in public settings.
Just like our students, Dexter practices his skills every day—some days better than others! He loves kids, attention, and, of course, his afternoon naps in the office.
Therapy dogs like Dexter can make a big difference in schools. Research shows that therapy dogs help reduce anxiety, promote emotional regulation, and encourage positive social interactions. They offer comfort, companionship, and a calming presence—creating a more supportive and welcoming environment for everyone.
Our long-term goal is for Dexter to visit the elementary school more often so younger students can enjoy his company too. For now, you’ll find him continuing his training at the middle/high school—making friends in the halls, getting treats from the business office, and enjoying his well-earned noon nap.
🐾 We’re so proud of Dexter and grateful for the joy and comfort he brings to our school community every day! 💛
