Battle of the Books is a collaborative reading competition for upper elementary and middle school readers. Members of the elementary team, Popping Opossum Philosophers, were Kinlee Allen, Gibson Graham, Hagen Helton, Kimber Leahy, Kynzer Norman, Avery Redman, and Betty Stoner. Elementary students read books from a preselected Iowa Children’s Choice Award list. A statewide competition was held on April 13. This group came in third out of sixty teams after round one, which advanced them to the second round. The CD Team then finished in eleventh place, overall. Students also participated in an author talk with Kelly J. Baptist, who wrote Isaiah Done Is My Hero.
