Eighth Graders Explore Holocaust Through Diary of Anne Frank

In Bonnie Clark’s Eighth Grade Reading Class, Bonnie showed a video clip from Band of
Brothers
, which follows Easy Company, 506th Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division as they
discovered one of the concentration camps where the soldiers liberated the Jewish prisoners
that were left there to die during World War II. The video clip led the class into learning about the
Holocaust. This video clip gave the students a visual of what the Holocaust survivors looked like
after all of their torture and suffering during the war. Students are now reading the play, The
Diary of Anne Frank
by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett. Anne Frank kept a diary of the
events that took place when she and her family and a few others hid upstairs of an annex
building from the Nazis for two years. Students will be picking and switching character parts to
read both acts of the play.
