Blue N’ Gold Breakaway and Barrel Bonanza

Story submitted by Lexi Jensen

The FFA hosted their First Annual Blue N’ Gold Breakaway on Friday September 9. This breakaway was made possible by the help of our dedicated members, volunteers, our Blue ‘N Gold committee and all of our generous sponsors. We had $350.00 added in this event that 30 contestants vied for.  There were 3 rounds of roping with prizes awarded to the fast time in each round and the top 6 in the average.  It was exciting to see local competitors, Bly Hunt and Layni Masters, take home some money and also earn a Breakaway Bonus Qualifier to rope in Shawnee, OK for $5,000.00.   This event was made possible by the donations of our generous sponsors: Southern Iowa Saddle Shop, Russell Livestock Auction, Commercial Roof Coatings, AgriVision Equipment, Decatur County Fairboard, and Leon Rodeo Committee.

The FFA hosted their 8th Annual Blue N’ Gold Barrel Bonanza on Saturday September 10. This barrel race was made possible by the help of our dedicated members, volunteers, our Blue ‘N Gold committee and all of our generous sponsors. We had $1,200.00 added in the open and $200.00 added to the youth. This brought 90 open runners, 12 youth runners, 7 peewee runners, 32 adult runners, and 24 masters runners to our barrel race. We had a “Fearless in the Fight” award to honor Amanda Loghry. This award included all of her favorite things and a leather saddle cross that had the statement “fearless in the fight”. This award went to the barrel racer that was always compassionate, kind and caring no matter what happened. The “Fearless in the Fight” Winner was Elisha Vickroy.
